      Article 1(1): “All peoples have the right of self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.”

      Article 1(3): “The States Parties to the present Covenant, including those having responsibility for the administration of Non_Self-Governing and Trust Territories, shall promote the realization of self-determination, and shall respect that right, in conformity with the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations.”

      Article 7: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. In particular, no one shall be subjected without his free consent to medical or scientific experimentation.

      Article 8(3)(a):” No one shall be required to perform forced or compulsory labour.”

      Article 9(1):”Everyone has the right to liberty and security of the person. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention.”

      Article 10(1):”All persons deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person.”

      Article 11: “No one shall be imprisoned merely on the ground of inability to fulfill a contractual obligation.”

  • Geneva Convention (Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949)

    • Article 3(1): “Persons taking no active part in hostilities […] shall in all circumstances be treated humanely, without any adverse distinction.
    • Article 31: “No physical or moral coercion shall be exercised against protected persons, in particular to obtain information from them or from third parties.
    • Article 32: “This prohibition applies not only to murder, torture, corporal punishment, mutilation and medical or cientific experiments not necessitated by the medical treatment of a protected person.”
  • Geneva Convention (Additional Protocols – 1977)
